Why Is It Illegal To Kill A Canadian Goose?

Canadian Goose Hunting Law

Canadian geese and seagulls are some of the most irritating birds alive. They love sitting in traffic and not moving. Also, they suffer from the chihuahua problem, challenging everything they see and thinking they’ll win when they have the most fragile bone structure for receiving impacts. Their bones are designed to handle turbulence when they fly because they’re birds.

The tradeoff to having a bone structure like that is that they’re highly fragile to impacts. So they sit in the middle of the road, tight roping. Canadian geese will also run towards you between life and death, honking if you step within six feet of their vicinity, even if you’re 20 times their size.

An animal that could die from a karate chop is way too aggressive. The worst part about the Canadian case is there are so many of them, and they’re everywhere. So, can you kill or hunt a Canadian goose legally? Is it a crime?

Laws and regulations in both the United States and Canada protect the Canada goose. This protection is intended to help conserve wildlife populations and ensure they remain healthy and sustainable.

In the United States, the Canada goose is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, which makes it illegal to hunt, kill, sell, purchase, or possess migratory birds or their parts (like feathers, eggs, and nests) except under the terms of a valid permit issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

In Canada, the Canada goose is protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act. This act regulates the hunting of migratory birds and establishes protections for their nests. Hunting Canadian geese is allowed in certain seasons and with certain restrictions, but it’s regulated to ensure that hunting doesn’t harm the overall population of the birds. Let’s know more details from the law’s point of view.

Why is it illegal to kill a Canadian goose?

Canadian geese are especially aggressive during nesting season. They even forced a school in Columbus to cancel track practice. I witnessed the geese chasing the kids on practice the other day. The coach tried to keep the kids safe, but I got a crack. Everyone thinks it’s funny that getting attacked by a goose made me famous. So I wanted to verify whether Canadian geese are protected species and what you should do if one gets aggressive.

The chief wildlife officer at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History says he’s also been attacked, and he started flapping his wings and bringing his wrist towards geese. So think about all of the muscles on the chest of that bird for flying, snapping that wing at you. It’s mighty.

Never turn away from the bird. Face it, but back up and get yourself out of its territory. The officer says the geese can fly faster than you can run. So if you have aggressive geese on your property, contact the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and let the professionals remove them.

  • You can hunt the geese during hunting season with a hunting license. However, they’re protected in Ohio in the off-season, including their eggs. So you cannot remove or harm them, and that’s verified.

Canada Geese are protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994 (MBCA).

The penalty depends on where you live. Also, there is a hunting season for them. Without a special permit or license, you can not hunt/kill Canadian geese outside of the season. Moreover, it would be illegal to kill them, and hunting/killing Canada goose has a minimum fine of $5,000. The punishment/penalty varies from locality to locality. Accidentally killing a goose or protecting it from a goose attack is not an offense.
